Well this was my first week in my OB clinical....for clinicals we are there on Tuesday from 1-6pm and Friday from 6:30am - noon. One of our major assignments during this rotation is to be with a mom from the min she comes in until baby is born - so this could be anywhere from 2 hours on...just depends on the mom. This needs to be a labor and delivery paper and c-sections don't count unless your "mom" tried to deliver naturally but then had complications.
The whole point is for you to have the experience to help understand what the nurses have to do for these patients. Well we got there for clinical on Wed - so mind you I was up at 5am, only to find out there was an induction coming in at 9am and I was asked if I wanted to stay. I thought, why not! I could get my paper down and out of the way, but little did I know this was primip (first time pregnancy) and the nurse told me after I had already agreed to stay that this would be about a 12 hour day! YIKES!!! So I stayed....until 1am, I learned so much that day and I really do wish we had more experiences like that and less about the paper work! I worked with two RN's (since I was there for shift change), and they were both amazing! They were so receptive to having a student follow them around, look over their shoulder and ask countless questions. They were both wonderful in explaining everything, including rationales!!
My "mom" finally delivered at 1122pm and gave birth to a health 8lb 6oz baby girl!
But that wasn't the end of it, because after getting home at 1am and finally getting to sleep, I had to be up by 530am again cause now I had a test for health promotions! I had been studying during down time at the hospital and apparently it paid off, I got an 88% on my test!
So even though I didn't get much sleep this week I did learn a lot - not only about material but also what sort of RN I want to be!!!
